Five Reasons Your Attitude Is Hurting Your Career - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career This post is about trying to help you, not about criticizing you. Please consider it in that light. Your attitude is one of the most important factors in creating your long-term career happiness. As noted in the first chapter of my career book, Attitude is important in landing a job, keeping a job, and being proactively prepared to change jobs. Whether you recognize it or not, your attitude IS affecting your career. either positively or negatively. In this article, I want to help alert you if it  could be retarding your progress or standing in the way of achieving the career results you desire. If you are happy with your boss, your peers, your subordinates, your income, your job title, your career progression, your opportunity for advancement, your profession, your industry, and your employers culture, then the odds are  high that your attitude is in good shape. If you are not happy with one or more of these items, however, then one or more of the following yellow flags could be worth examining: 1. You have a troll for a boss who makes your workdays unpleasant, possibly because you attracted him/her  or because you have stayed in your job when you know you should have left long ago. 2. You have jerks on your team who you dont enjoy, possibly because you lack the self-confidence to professionally confront them or to refer the situation to someone with the authority to correct the situation. 3. You have a troublesome employee who is disruptive to your team, possibly because you feel you do not have the power to replace him or her. 4. Your income has become stagnant or dropped and this is creating financial stress, possibly because you dont feel comfortable promoting your value within your employer or to other employers. 5. Your job title makes your position sound less responsible than it is and this creates a perception problem on your resume, possibly because you have not advocated strongly enough to have your title corrected/improved. Yes, Virginia, I actually have the unmitigated gall to suggest that you have created your current career circumstances through your own personal choices and that those choices are likely to have been influenced by your attitude. Conversely, I want to offer you the  genuine possibility that  you have the power to improve all of these situations. Not by complaining. Not overnight. Not from terrible to fantastic in one fell swoop. But yes. You have the power to improve them. How? Please stay tuned. I promise to address this in a few weeks. Until then, consider conducting some internet searches and seek out  articles that offer  ways to improve your attitude. The rewards could be huge!

Interviewing is intimidating, nerve wracking, and can make you feel like you’re two heartbeats away from having a heart attack. You only have one shot at making a great first impression so you need to make sure you’re prepared to give the right answers during your next interview. As a leading Career Coach  for the past five years, Ive gathered interviewing tips from my clients who have been hired and written an e-book, Interviewing Smart Insider Secrets from Professionals Who Got  the Job!   Here  are five key questions going through your interviewer’s mind… 1.   Can you do the job? These questions are usually very black and white. Either you have what it takes to be successful in the position or not. Before the interview, be sure to study the job description so that you fully understand the job requirements. Be prepared to talk about your skills, knowledge, and training that will help you perform the job successfully. The biggest mistake I see job candidates making is talking about their responsibilities, and what they need to focus on are the results and accomplishments they’ve achieved for their previous employers. 2.   What “extras” do you bring? For most job openings, a hiring manager knows about 90% of the work that the new employee will be responsible for, but not the remaining 10%. That is because they want to know, What can you (the new employee) ADD to the position? So before you go into a job interview, think about any additional skills and talents that you can bring to the position. 3.   Where are you at risk? Every new employee is a risk to a company. Whether it’s a specific job requirement that you don’t meet, or potentially being overqualified for the position, or a potential health risk, etc. So, spend some time thinking about where you are a risk. I like to beat the interviewer to the punch by stating where I’m a risk and then reassuring her why it won’t be a problem. For example, if the job requires that you need to know of a specific type of software, then I want you to sign-up for some training before your interview so that you can say that you’ve already registered for some training to learn more about the software. The point is that you need to be able to discuss the area(s) where you are a risk, and then immediately

Stop talking business when youre networking I was fortunate enough to attend “The Introverted Leader” half day workshop last week with Jennifer Kahnweiler. Jennifer really impressed me personally, and professionally. She has written a book also titled The Introverted Leader, which she interviewed 100 introverted leaders to learn the secrets to their success in a society/workplace that tends to favor extroverts. This involved her asking them how they built upon their quiet strength to be successful. One very interesting thing I learned is how to better prepare for networking events to get better results. Its the concept of giving and getting. Her suggestion is to   write down three things in a column, that you want to get out of the event (client leads, new business, job ideas etc.) and also three things that you want to GIVE in a column (this is an important part many people often forget!). I dont know about you, but I have trouble with the giving aspect. I often think I dont have enough or anything to offer.   This is not true! At the workshop I was able to really think about it and brainstorm information I could give or provide at a networking event with a partner.  This was a very beneficial exercise because I came up with several things, both personal and professional, that I could give more of. One critical thing I learned with this exercise is that what you give can be personal interaction, not just professional. (i.e. I like yoga, I recently went to an art show that I enjoyed etc.) We can connect with people on many levels, not just professional. This helps us establish rapport. People connect with people best on a personal level right? So use that as your first approach, and THEN get to the business aspect. What personal things have you done lately that you can share with people at your next networking event? As we know, the hidden job market (through networking) is the most effective way to get a job. Statistics show that 70% of job seekers landed their jobs through networking, not online job boards guys. Get out there and connect this week! Stop talking business and start with the personal!
